Problem doskonalenia pracy w Oddziałach Intensywnej Opieki Medycznej jest zarówno w Polsce, jak i w innych krajach przedmiotem wymagającym wielu starań.
Podobnie jak w całym systemie opieki zdrowotnej, na oddziałach tych popełniane są błędy medyczne, zdarzają się też odstępstwa od przyjętych procedur. Aby uniknąć tych sytuacji, a także w celu umożliwienia praktycznego wdrażania najnowszych wyników badań, w Belgii na OIOM-ach wykorzystuje się protokoły i listy kontrolne zaleceń oraz przeprowadza się bieżącą, systematyczną kontrolę. Stosowana jest też prosta metoda FAST HUG, która stawia w centrum uwagi 7 najważniejszych zasad opieki medycznej nad pacjentem na OIOM-ie. Nazwę tej metody utworzono od pierwszych liter wykonywanych działań. Jednocześnie metoda ta zawiera aspekt indywidualnego podejścia do pacjenta - dotyk, słowa fast hug oznaczają mocny uścisk. In order to improve the quality of patient care in the intensive care until (ICU), efforts are continually being made in Poland and other countries alike Similarly to other parts of the healthcare system, medical errors, malpractice and variations in clinical practice are still common. Trying to minimize the occurrence of such matters and to encourage application of the latest research results, in Belgium's ICU some new methods hare been introduced. Among them are protocols and checklist, and it seems that especially the second ones enable the constant, systematic and detailed control over a patient's care. There is also an application of the procedure named "the Fast Hug". It is simple mnemonic, which highlights seven of the key areas that must be considered regularly by the entire staff for each ICU patient during the ICU stay. The name Fast Hug is compiled from first letters of its seven components (easy to remember). Apart from its obvious practical values, the method includes an aspect of individual approach, a personal touch - a hug, what is of big importance for patient's frame of mind.
