POCZĄTKI ANESTEZJI W DENTYSTYCE

THE BEGINNINGS OF ANAESTHESIA IN DENTISTRY

STRESZCZENIE
Nazwę „anestezja” wprowadził do medycyny Amerykanin Oliver Wendel Holmes w latach czterdziestych XIX wieku. W tym czasie do znieczuleń i usypiania chorych zastosowano podtlenek azotu, eter i chloroform. Za ojca anestezji uznano amerykańskiego dentystę Horacego Wellsa, który pierwszy w dziejach medycyny wykorzystał znieczulające własności podtlenku azotu podczas ekstrakcji zębów.

Wprowadzenie eteru do medycyny stało się zasługą Williama Thomasa Mortona. W październiku 1846 roku pacjent uśpiony przez Mortona eterem został poddany operacji usunięcia guza szyi. W roku następnym pierwszą narkozę eterową na ziemiach polskich wykonał Ludwik Bierkowski. W listopadzie 1847 roku do narkozy pacjentów użyto chloroformu.

SUMMARY
Term ‘anaesthesia’ was introduced by an American Oliver Wendell Holmes in the 40-ties of 19th century. Back then nitrous oxide, ether and chloroform were used to anaesthetize patients. However it is Horace Wells an American dentist who is considered to be a father of anaesthesia. He was the first to use the anaesthetic prosperities of nitrous oxide in tooth extraction. William Thomas Morton introduced ether into medicine. Patient anaesthetized by Morton in October 1846 underwent the operation of neck tumor removal. Next year it was Ludwik Bierkowski who was the first to use ether on polish lands. In November 1847 chloroform was first used in anesthesia. Gardner Quiney Colton was the propagator of nitrous oxide among Americans. The pioneer of endotracheal narcosis was German, Friedrich Trendelenburg. It was also German who performed for the first time the narcosis with intubation. The progress in local anaesthesia was made with the introduction of syringe and new anaesthetic substances like cocaine.
Keys words: dentistry, history of anaesthesia, nitrous oxide, ether, chloroform, narcosis, cocaine, syringe.
